Celtic-Knot Cross (Alisee Pattee)
The Celts were known for their intricate knot-work, which has no beginning or ending – likened to the unique attribute of God. Hence, many of the Celt’s interlaced knot-works have been used to decorate biblical manuscripts in the early days.
This Celtic-Knot Cross (the shape of which is called “Alisee Pattee”) has 3-interlaced loops in each arm of the cross, signifying the Oneness of the Holy Trinity and it also exhorts us to pray unceasingly as what St. Paul wrote in 1 Thessalonians 5:17.
The “Alisee Pattee” is a cross with a circular circumference; the circle being a symbol of eternity and with the design of the knot-work, it reminds us that all of humanity is linked as one and eternal life can only be found in Jesus Christ – through the Way of the Cross.
This Celtic-Knot Cross is printed on the cover of the prayer book (the Divine Office) of the Catholic Church, serving to remind us to pray constantly and unceasingly in union with Jesus for the salvation of the Church and the world.
May it also remind us of the unending love that Jesus has for us.
